G7 Summit 2025: Why India’s Seat at the Table Matters More Than Ever

Published on June 8, 2025 by Vivek Kumar

As the world’s most powerful economies prepare to gather for the upcoming G7 Summit, one name outside the traditional group is drawing attention—India. And according to Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney, India’s presence is not just welcome—it’s essential.

“India is now the fifth-largest economy and a central figure in global supply chains,” said Carney, who currently chairs the G7. “Of course it belongs at the table.”

Carney confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accepted the invitation to attend the summit, underscoring India’s rising global stature.

A Shift in Global Power Dynamics

India’s economic ascent is undeniable. In May 2025, the country overtook Japan to become the fourth-largest economy in the world. Today, India stands ahead of every G7 nation except the United States and Germany in terms of economic size.

Experts believe that the West can no longer have serious discussions on global issues without involving India. Vina Nadjibulla, Vice President of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, emphasized this in a recent interview.

“There was strong backing from the other G7 members to have India join the conversation,” she explained. “Canada might’ve been slower to embrace this, but the rest of the G7 recognizes that deepening ties with India is no longer optional—it’s necessary.”

Strategic Significance Beyond the Economy

India’s role extends beyond economic data. With its vast population, growing tech capabilities, and expanding influence in supply chains, it is fast becoming a crucial player in shaping the future of global trade, defense collaboration, and technology partnerships.

For example:

  • France, the UK, and the US have all recently deepened defense and tech partnerships with India.

  • Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has visited India twice in recent years, strengthening trade and diplomatic relations.

Trade figures reflect this momentum. In 2023-24, India-Italy bilateral trade reached $14.56 billion, making Italy India’s fourth-largest trading partner in the EU.

Diplomacy with Purpose

Nadjibulla put it bluntly: “Diplomacy isn’t about just engaging with friends. It’s a tool to advance national interests and values.”

Carney’s decision to invite India is seen as a signal that Canada wants to remain relevant on the world stage—by engaging with major powers, not just long-standing allies.

UK and India: A Growing Partnership

Meanwhile, the UK is doubling down on its relationship with India. British Foreign Secretary David Lammy is visiting India this week to discuss the implementation of the historic Free Trade Agreement signed recently.

According to the UK government:

  • The deal is projected to boost UK-India trade by over £25 billion annually.

  • It could raise UK GDP by £4.8 billion and increase wages by £2.2 billion each year in the long term.

Why India Belongs at the G7 Table

  • 4th-largest economy globally

  • World’s most populous country

  • Key player in critical global supply chains

  • Growing influence in international diplomacy, defense, and technology

  • Strategic partnerships with major G7 members already underway

The Big Picture

India’s invitation to the G7 isn’t just symbolic—it reflects a new world order. As power and influence shift towards Asia, countries like India are no longer just participants; they’re shaping the global agenda.

So, when world leaders gather to address pressing global challenges—from climate change to AI regulation to economic resilience—India’s voice will be part of the conversation.

And this year, that conversation begins in Canada.
