Prime Minister Modi Urges Greater Visibility for Punishments in Atrocities Against Women

During his Independence Day address from the Red Fort on the 78th anniversary of India’s freedom, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the need for making the punishment of those who commit atrocities against women more visible. He highlighted the urgency of swift investigations and strict penalties for such crimes.

“Today, from the Red Fort, I want to share my deep anguish. As a society, we must confront the heinous acts committed against our mothers, sisters, and daughters,” Modi stated. He acknowledged the widespread public anger over these incidents and expressed his own empathy with the frustration felt by many.

The Prime Minister’s remarks follow the recent rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital in West Bengal. Modi pointed out that while these crimes receive significant media coverage, the resulting punishments often do not get the same attention, usually remaining confined to brief mentions in the news.

NEW DELHI: During his Independence Day address from the Red Fort on the 78th anniversary of India’s freedom, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the need for making the punishment of those who commit atrocities against women more visible.

“Crimes against women are widely discussed, but the punishment of those responsible is not given the prominence it deserves. It should be widely reported,” Modi said. He stressed the importance of instilling a sense of fear among potential offenders by publicizing the consequences of their actions.

“The current situation demands that we make the punishments for such crimes highly visible to deter others. Those who commit such grievous acts should know that they will face severe consequences, including the possibility of the death penalty,” he added.

Following the Prime Minister’s comments, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the investigation of the RG Kar Medical College case, as directed by the Calcutta High Court.
