The West Bengal government has established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe allegations of financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The SIT’s formation was announced by the state’s Home and Hill Affairs Department through a notification issued by the special secretary.
The SIT will investigate claims of financial misconduct at the hospital from January 2021 to the present. According to the notification, the team will have full access to necessary documents from both government departments and private agencies to ensure a thorough investigation.
The SIT will be led by Dr. Pranav Kumar, an IPS officer and inspector-general, with support from three other IPS officers: Waquar Reza (DIG, Murshidabad range), Soma Das Mitra (DIG, CID), and Indira Mukherjee (DC-Central, Kolkata Police). The team may enlist additional officers and staff from the police directorate and Kolkata Police as needed and is expected to submit its preliminary report within a month.
Context and Implications:
Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, assumed his role in early 2021. During his tenure, students protested his refusal to establish separate student and resident hall councils, leading to his removal from the position. The current SIT investigation will examine any potential financial mismanagement that may have occurred since Ghosh’s appointment.
