The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Anti-Corruption Branch has reportedly gathered substantial evidence in its ongoing corruption investigation against Sandeep Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The investigation, which also involves the ex-medical superintendent Sanjay Vashisth and 13 others, has revealed significant financial irregularities at the institution, according to officials.

Early on the morning of August 25, CBI officers, supported by a large team of central forces, arrived at Ghosh’s residence in Kolkata. The team was reportedly made to wait for nearly an hour and a half before Ghosh opened the door. The search continued for several hours, during which the officials uncovered crucial evidence related to the case. When asked about the findings, a CBI official cryptically responded, “Bahut kuch hai” (there is a lot).

The CBI launched its investigation into Sandeep Ghosh after filing a First Information Report (FIR) on Saturday, August 24. The investigation follows orders from the Calcutta High Court, which directed the CBI to look into both the alleged financial irregularities and the recent murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the hospital. The FIR charges Ghosh and three Kolkata-based private entities with criminal conspiracy, cheating, and violations of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Throughout the day, CBI officers interrogated Ghosh at his Beliaghata residence. Simultaneously, other teams questioned Vashisth, the former medical superintendent, as well as other officials involved in the alleged corruption. The investigation also extended to the hospital premises, including the ex-principal’s office and the canteen in the academic building.

This development comes in the wake of the tragic rape and murder of a female postgraduate trainee doctor in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College on August 9, which led to nationwide protests. A Kolkata Police civic volunteer has already been arrested in connection with the crime, and the ongoing investigation into the financial irregularities is likely to intensify scrutiny on the management of the hospital during Ghosh’s tenure.

The CBI’s findings in this case are expected to have significant implications, potentially leading to further legal actions against those involved in the alleged corruption at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
