‘Some Nexus, Role in Larger Conspiracy’: CBI’s Allegations Against Ex-RG Kar Principal Sandip Ghosh

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) revealed on Sunday that Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, may be involved in a broader conspiracy related to a recent rape-murder case. Ghosh, who is not directly accused of rape and murder, is suspected of tampering with evidence.

The CBI’s allegations came during a court hearing in Kolkata, where they detailed Ghosh’s communication with Tala Police Station’s officer-in-charge, Abhijit Mondal, shortly after the body of a 31-year-old doctor was discovered on the hospital premises. Mondal was arrested the previous night for tampering with evidence in the case.

“We have evidence showing that Mondal and Ghosh were in contact. Ghosh was not directly involved in the rape and murder but may have played a role in a larger conspiracy,” the CBI’s counsel stated in court. The agency also highlighted discrepancies, noting that Mondal arrived at the scene at 11 am, but the FIR was only registered after 11 pm.

Both Ghosh and Mondal were presented in court and have been remanded in CBI custody for two days. The next court hearing is scheduled for September 17.

The Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court have previously criticized the delay in filing the FIR. The complaint was registered 14 hours after the doctor’s body was found, prompting questions about the RG Kar administration’s handling of the case under Ghosh’s leadership.

These arrests mark the CBI’s first significant actions in the investigation following a month-long probe. Earlier, the Kolkata Police had arrested civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy, who was subsequently transferred to CBI custody after the high court directed the central agency to take over the investigation.
