The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has suspended the membership of Sandip Ghosh, former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, following the alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor at the Kolkata-based institution earlier this month. The suspension, announced on August 28, 2024, came after the IMA’s disciplinary committee reviewed the case and the subsequent handling of the situation by Ghosh.
The IMA’s decision follows a CBI investigation into the incident and complaints about Ghosh’s lack of empathy and improper handling of the case. The association’s national president, R.V. Asokan, and the IMA general secretary met with the victim’s family to discuss their grievances. The committee’s order noted that Ghosh’s actions brought disrepute to the medical profession.
Additionally, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has initiated a money laundering case to probe financial irregularities at R.G. Kar Hospital, and the CBI is conducting further polygraph tests on Ghosh and others involved.
