Kolkata Rape Case: Section 163 Imposed Around RG Kar Medical College, Protests Erupt Nationwide

RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata

In the wake of the horrific rape and murder of a PG resident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, the city and the nation have been gripped by protests and calls for justice. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a nationwide protest, prompting a strong reaction from various sectors, including the victim’s family, who have raised concerns about possible involvement from other interns and residents. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently probing these allegations, with 30 individuals under suspicion and ongoing questioning.

The victim’s autopsy revealed that the crime likely occurred between 3 AM and 5 AM, aligning with her scheduled duty hours of 3 AM to 10 AM. The victim’s father expressed his deep concerns, questioning why his daughter, despite being an on-duty doctor, was not needed during those critical hours. He also suggested that the entire department may be under suspicion, hinting at broader complicity.

In a significant development, the Kolkata Police have enforced Section 163 under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, banning any gatherings, protests, or rallies around the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for seven days. The restricted areas include key locations like Shyambazaar 5-point crossing, Belgachia road, and J.K Mitra crossing.

Adding to the investigation, the CBI has received the victim’s personal diary and a notepad found at the crime scene, both of which are under scrutiny for potential clues. A psychologist from the CBI has also arrived in Kolkata to assist with the investigation, indicating the complexity of the case.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with protests erupting across the country. In Kolkata, theatre artists have taken to the streets, while in other parts of India, including Aligarh Muslim University and Odisha’s Koraput, medical professionals and nursing associations have organized protests demanding justice.

The victim’s grueling work conditions have also come under scrutiny, with reports suggesting that she was made to work for up to 48 hours at a stretch. This revelation has raised serious questions about the working conditions of medical professionals and the potential impact on their safety.

As the investigation continues, public figures have weighed in on the case. Rajasthan Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore criticized the West Bengal government, comparing the state’s situation to Rajasthan’s past issues with crimes against women. Former National Commission for Women chief Rekha Sharma also voiced doubts, suggesting that the crime might not have been committed by just one person.

Meanwhile, a social media user has reported receiving a notice from Kolkata Police for allegedly posting “offensive, malicious, and inciting” content about the case, sparking concerns about freedom of expression in the context of such sensitive issues.

The victim’s family and the public are calling for the harshest punishment for the perpetrators, with Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai demanding that the accused be hanged. Nirbhaya’s mother, Asha Devi, also criticized the state of women’s safety in India, questioning the effectiveness of laws meant to protect women.

The CBI’s investigation continues, with former RG Kar Medical College Principal Dr. Sandip Ghosh being questioned for the second consecutive day. As the nation awaits justice, protests continue to grow, demanding accountability and safety for all.
