No Airtel Involvement in Bharti’s $4 Billion Investment in BT Group, Says Sunil Mittal

Bharti Enterprises Ltd. has confirmed that its recent $4 billion investment in British Telecom (BT) Group does not involve Airtel. This move aims to enhance BT’s performance and strengthen global operations, according to Bharti Enterprises Chairperson Sunil Bharti Mittal.

In a recent interview, Sunil Bharti Mittal clarified that Bharti Enterprises’ substantial investment in BT Group is separate from its operations in India, particularly Airtel. Mittal emphasized that this strategic investment is focused on boosting BT Group’s performance and capitalizing on the UK’s strong ties with India.

The investment, which values Bharti’s acquisition at approximately $4 billion, will make Bharti the largest shareholder in BT Group with a 24.5% stake. The acquisition will be carried out through Bharti Televentures UK Ltd., a fully owned subsidiary of Bharti Global, thereby enhancing Bharti’s position in the global telecom sector.

Mittal explained that such a large-scale acquisition is challenging due to the complexities of market timing and securing a willing seller. Despite the size and scope of the deal, he reiterated that Airtel, which operates exclusively in India, is not involved in this transaction.

“This investment is about putting more of our capital into the UK and reflects our long-term strategy of global expansion while leveraging our strong foundation in India,” Mittal stated.

This strategic move underscores Bharti Enterprises’ commitment to global growth and further solidifies its presence in the international telecom market.
