Sanjoy Roy, the main suspect in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a government-run hospital in Kolkata, has a reported history of violence against women. The 33-year-old is accused of raping and murdering a second-year trainee doctor. CCTV footage shows Roy entering the emergency building of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital at 4 am on the day of the incident, wearing a Bluetooth device around his neck. However, when he left the building 40 minutes later, the earphone was missing. Investigators found the device near the victim’s body and linked it to Roy’s cellphone, connecting him to the crime.
The post-mortem report confirmed that the 31-year-old trainee doctor was sexually assaulted and murdered. The report found multiple injuries on her body, signs of struggle, including blood stains, scratch marks, and a broken collarbone.
Background of Sanjoy Roy
Sanjoy Roy, arrested on August 10, is currently under 14-day judicial custody. He worked as a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police’s Disaster Management Group since 2019 and was later transferred to the Police Welfare Cell. He was assigned to the police outpost at the hospital, giving him access to all departments within the facility. Sources say Roy often pretended to be an officer, wearing a Kolkata Police T-shirt and using his connections to stay in barracks. He was allegedly involved in a scheme within the hospital, taking bribes and extorting money from patients’ relatives by promising them beds.
Investigations by the Kolkata police revealed that Roy’s mobile phone contained several disturbing and violent pornographic clips. He reportedly confessed to the crime without showing any remorse and told the police, “If you want, you can hang me,” according to local media reports.
Neighbors and Family Speak Out
Sanjoy Roy’s neighbors have shared troubling details about his personal life. They claim he had married multiple times, with three of his wives leaving him due to his abusive behavior. His fourth wife reportedly died of cancer last year. Those who knew Roy described him as a repeat offender with a pattern of violence against women. His neighbors claimed he would often return home late at night, allegedly drunk.
However, Sanjoy Roy’s mother has defended her son, claiming he is innocent and was framed for the crime. She alleged that Roy was forced to confess under police pressure. “My son is innocent. He has confessed to the crime under the pressure of police,” she told India Today.
Government Response
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has assured swift action in the case. She announced that if the police fail to solve the case by Sunday, the investigation would be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
