In a tragic and horrifying incident, Kolkata Police confirmed that 31-year-old trainee doctor was sexually assaulted before being murdered at a government hospital on Friday.
The postmortem report revealed multiple injuries on her private parts, face, lips, throat, abdomen, fingers, and ankles. The police have arrested one individual in connection with the crime.
A second-year postgraduate medical student at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, had a late-night meal on Thursday before heading to the third-floor seminar hall to study. The following day, she was found unconscious.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal confirmed the arrest, stating, “We have strong evidence against the suspect, and we will ensure he faces the highest punishment.”
Junior doctors across various hospitals in West Bengal staged protests, demanding harsh punishment for those involved.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the incident as “unfortunate and heinous,” assuring the victim’s family of appropriate action. She has directed that the case be moved to a fast-track court and promised strict punishment for the culprits.
Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the case. He criticized the state government for forming an 11-member inquiry committee, which includes some interns, suggesting that the matter is not being taken seriously.
