The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Sandeep Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, along with three others, on charges of financial irregularities. The CBI had detained Ghosh on August 16, and today, he was transferred from the CBI’s Special Crime Branch office to the Anti-Corruption Branch.
On August 24, the CBI filed a case against Ghosh for financial misconduct, acting on the orders of the Calcutta High Court. Following this, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) suspended Ghosh’s membership on August 28.
Meanwhile, protests in Kolkata continue for the 24th day over the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College. On Monday, September 2, junior doctors from various medical colleges staged a protest demanding the immediate resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal.
The incident in question occurred on the night of August 8-9, when a 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and murdered. Her body was found the following morning, sparking ongoing protests across Bengal.
Doctors Protest Against Police
On Monday, doctors rallied up to the Kolkata Police Headquarters, accusing the police of not taking concrete steps during the investigation of the RG Kar case and failing to prevent vandalism at the college. The police tried to stop the rally by barricading B B Ganguly Street.
The BJP also held protests in Siliguri and Alipurduar against the RG Kar incident. In Alipurduar, BJP workers protested outside the DM office, where the police used barricades and water cannons to disperse them.
Accused Claims Doctor’s Body Was Already in the Seminar Hall
According to a report by the Times of India, accused Sanjay Roy told the CBI during a polygraph test that he accidentally entered the seminar room on the night of August 8 while searching for oxygen for a patient. Upon entering the room on the third floor, he found the trainee doctor’s body. After failing to detect any movement, he panicked and ran out, dropping his Bluetooth device in the process. Roy claims he did not know the doctor before this incident and that there was no security at the hospital gate that night.
Sanjay’s polygraph test was conducted on August 25 in Kolkata’s Presidency Jail. The CBI and Central Forensic Team questioned him for around three hours. So far, 10 people have undergone polygraph tests related to this case, including former RG Kar Principal Sandeep Ghosh, ASI Anup Dutta, four fellow doctors, one volunteer, and two security guards.
Adhir Ranjan Claims Rape Victim’s Family Is Under House Arrest
Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury claimed that the rape victim’s parents are under house arrest. On August 31, he said he met with the trainee doctor’s family, who have been confined to their home by the police. They are not allowed to leave, with heavy security surrounding their residence. Chowdhury also alleged that the family was offered money by the police to expedite the funeral of their daughter, acting under orders from the state government.
Images of the Crime Scene Crowded with People Go Viral
Several images related to the rape and murder case of the trainee doctor have gone viral on social media, showing 10-12 people at the crime scene. It is claimed that these people, aside from the police, were present after the crime, raising concerns about tampering with evidence. The CBI had expressed concerns about potential evidence tampering during a Supreme Court hearing on August 20.
According to an India Today report, Kolkata police sources stated that the viral images were taken on August 9 after the investigation in the seminar hall was complete. The police claimed that the people in the images had authorization to be there, and there was no tampering with the crime scene. The photo was taken after the inquiry was finished.
Court Raised Doubts About Police Conduct
During the Supreme Court hearing on August 20, the CBI mentioned evidence tampering at the crime scene. Justice J.B. Pardiwala expressed doubt over the Kolkata police’s conduct, stating that he had never seen such negligence in his 30-year career.
Firing on BJP Leader’s Car During Bengal Bandh
A BJP leader’s car was fired upon in Bhaktpara, North 24 Parganas, during the Bengal Bandh called by the BJP on August 28, in response to the lathi charge on student protesters in Kolkata on August 27.
Several clashes occurred between police and BJP supporters during the bandh, with multiple leaders and workers detained. The shooting incident took place during the bandh, targeting the car of BJP leader Priyangu Pandey.
