CRPF Inspector Martyred in Terrorist Attack in Udhampur, Jammu and KashmirOn August 19, a CRPF inspector tragically lost his life in a terrorist attack in Udhampur district, Jammu and Kashmir. The incident occurred around 3:30 PM when terrorists opened fire on a joint patrol party comprising the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police in the remote Dudu area of Basantgarh.

The inspector, a member of the CRPF’s 187th battalion, was struck by a bullet during the encounter and succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital. Despite the heavy exchange of fire, the terrorists managed to flee the scene, though not without facing strong retaliation from the joint forces.

In response to the attack, security reinforcements were swiftly deployed, and a search operation was launched to locate and neutralize the fleeing terrorists. The area has been cordoned off to prevent their escape.

This attack is the latest in a series of violent encounters in the region, particularly in the Jammu division, where several security personnel have made the ultimate sacrifice in recent months.

The incident comes at a time when Jammu and Kashmir is preparing for its first assembly elections as a Union Territory. The last assembly elections in the region were held in 2014 when it was still a state. Now, the upcoming polls will cover 90 assembly constituencies, including 74 for general categories, nine reserved for Scheduled Tribes, and seven for Scheduled Castes.

Polling will be conducted in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, with vote counting scheduled for October 4. To ensure security during the elections, approximately 70 battalions (around 70,000 personnel) of central paramilitary forces are permanently stationed in the Union Territory. Additionally, the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Indian Army are responsible for maintaining vigilance along the international border.
