Doctors Protest Following Tragic Rape and Murder of Doctor In Kolkata Hospital

Kolkata, Aug. 11, 2024: In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves across the nation, doctors and nursing staff staged protests against the brutal rape and murder of a doctor inside the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The protest, now in its third day, has significantly affected medical services across government hospitals in West Bengal.

The Incident:

A civic volunteer, who was not officially associated with the hospital, has been arrested in connection with the heinous crime. According to the police, after allegedly committing the crime, the accused returned to his residence, slept, and later attempted to destroy evidence by washing his clothes. However, bloodstains were discovered on his shoes, leading to his arrest. The victim, a post-graduate trainee, was found lifeless inside a seminar hall of the hospital on Friday morning.

Investigation Update:

Kolkata’s City Police Commissioner, Vineet Goyal, visited the hospital twice in three days and held meetings with the protesting junior doctors. He assured that the investigation is being conducted with full transparency. “The autopsy report has been shared with the victim’s parents, and we are closely examining the evidence, including CCTV footage and forensic samples,” Goyal stated. Despite ongoing rumors, the police have found no evidence of additional suspects being involved in the crime.

Protests and Impact:

The protests, spearheaded by junior doctors, house staff, and post-graduate trainees, have brought emergency and non-emergency services to a standstill since Friday evening. The doctors are demanding swift justice for the victim and enhanced security measures in medical establishments. Support for the protest has come from various parts of the country, with the Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association of India (FORDA) calling for a nationwide halt of elective services on Monday.

Government Response:

In response to the escalating situation, the state health department has canceled all leaves for senior doctors to manage the crisis. The hospital has also expelled two security personnel who were contractually employed at the emergency ward, citing negligence that indirectly contributed to the crime. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has vowed to seek the death penalty for the perpetrator, emphasizing the need for justice and safety for all health workers.

Security Measures:

A large contingent of Kolkata Police has been deployed at the hospital to ensure the safety of the medical staff and prevent unauthorized entry into the premises. The police commissioner also announced the initiation of a toll-free number for the public to provide suggestions or complaints regarding the ongoing investigation.

The situation remains tense as the doctors continue their protest, demanding that their concerns be fully addressed before they resume work. The incident has not only highlighted severe lapses in security within the hospital but also raised broader questions about societal issues that require urgent attention.
