Former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, has found himself at the center of serious allegations, leading to the Kolkata Police filing an FIR against him. The case, initiated based on a complaint by the state health department, accuses Ghosh of forgery, criminal conspiracy, and violations under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The complaint came just days after Ghosh’s resignation, which followed the discovery of a trainee doctor’s body at the college premises. The West Bengal government, in its complaint, has alleged that a departmental inquiry uncovered a ‘criminal nexus’ between Ghosh and several contractors, with accusations of ‘collusive bidding’ for various projects within the hospital.
According to the inquiry, some of these allegations date back to April 2022. Ghosh is accused of securing work orders for contractors who lacked proper licenses and were ineligible to participate in the bidding process. The inquiry findings pointed to irregularities, including awarding contracts to companies such as M/s Eshan Café, M/s Khama Louha, and M/s Ma Tara Traders, with M/s Eshan Café allegedly receiving a contract to run a cafeteria through collusive bidding.
The complaint was filed by Debal Saha, an IAS officer serving as a special secretary in the state health department. It outlined the financial irregularities uncovered during the investigation and detailed the involvement of Ghosh in manipulating procurement processes to benefit certain contractors.
In response to these findings, the state government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by an Inspector General (IG) ranked officer, to further investigate the financial corruption charges against Ghosh.
