India’s campaign at the Paris 2024 Olympics concluded with a haul of six medals, one silver and five bronze. In contrast, during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, India had achieved a record of seven medals, including one gold, two silver, and four bronze, securing 48th place on the medal table. However, this time, the Indian contingent has slipped to 71st position in Paris. Indian athletes participated in various events, including archery, athletics, badminton, boxing, equestrian, golf, hockey, judo, swimming, sailing, shooting, wrestling, table tennis, and tennis.
Neeraj Chopra Secures Second Olympic Medal
Neeraj Chopra threw the javelin 89.45 meters in Paris, securing a silver medal, India’s fifth in the competition. Chopra made history by winning gold in Tokyo 2020, and with his silver in Paris 2024, he became the fifth Indian athlete to win two Olympic medals.
Manu Bhaker Becomes First Indian Woman to Win Two Medals in Shooting
India’s first bronze medal at the Paris Olympics came from Manu Bhaker in the women’s 10-meter air pistol individual event. Manu further added another bronze in the 10-meter air pistol mixed team event alongside Sarabjot Singh. This achievement makes her the first Indian woman to win two medals in shooting at a single Olympics. The last Indian to achieve a similar feat was Norman Pritchard, who won two silver medals in men’s 200 meters and men’s 200 meters hurdles at the Paris 1900 Olympics.
Swapnil Kusale Wins First Bronze
India’s third medal came from Swapnil Kusale in the 50-meter rifle three positions event. Swapnil became the first Indian to win a medal in this event at the Olympics.
India’s Best-Ever Performance in Shooting
With three medals in shooting, India achieved its best-ever performance in the sport at any Olympic Games. Previously, the best was at the London 2012 Olympics, where India won two shooting medals. Additionally, the 50-meter rifle three positions medal was India’s first in this category.
Back-to-Back Hockey Medals After 52 Years
The Indian men’s hockey team won the bronze medal by defeating Spain 2-1 after coming back from a goal down. This marks India’s second consecutive Olympic bronze in hockey, following their success in Tokyo 2020. This is also the 13th Olympic medal for India in hockey.
Youngest Medalist Aman Sahrawat Shines
Aman Sahrawat clinched bronze in the men’s 57 kg wrestling category by defeating Puerto Rico’s Darian Cruz 13-5. This was India’s eighth Olympic medal in wrestling. At 21 years and 24 days old, Aman became India’s youngest Olympic medalist, surpassing PV Sindhu, who won a silver medal at Rio 2016 at the age of 21 years, one month, and 14 days.
Awaiting Decision on the Seventh Medal
India could potentially increase its medal count, as wrestler Vinesh Phogat has appealed for a medal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The decision is expected on Tuesday, August 13. If the decision favors Vinesh, she could become the first Indian female wrestler to win a silver medal at the Olympics.
