Kolkata Rape-Murder: CBI Claims SHO Abhijit Mondol Arrived ‘Unusually’ Late at Crime Scene

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has informed a court in Sealdah that there may be a broader conspiracy involved in the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The agency suggested that Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the college, and Abhijit Mondol, the officer-in-charge of Tala police station, could have played crucial roles in the alleged plot.

According to the CBI, Ghosh and Mondol were in contact after the crime surfaced, with Ghosh reportedly advising Mondol on how to handle the investigation. Both Ghosh and Mondol were arrested last week, and on Sunday, the court granted the CBI custody of the duo until September 17.

The CBI has criticized Mondol for his delayed response, noting that he took an “unusually long time” to arrive at the crime scene. The agency reported that Mondol was informed about the crime at 10:03 am but only reached the scene at 11:00 am, despite the location being a five-minute drive away.

The investigation has revealed that the victim, a doctor who had gone to rest during a 36-hour shift, was found raped and murdered inside the seminar hall of the hospital. The CBI also accused Ghosh of delaying the filing of the FIR and attempting to misrepresent the murder as a suicide.

A civic volunteer named Sanjay Roy has also been arrested in connection with the case.

The CBI aims to interrogate Ghosh and Mondol together to further investigate their roles in the case.
