Nitish Kumar Inaugurates Reopened Rega Sugar Mill A Big Boost for Farmers

The Rega Sugar Mill in Sitamarhi district has been reopened, much to the relief of local agricultural communities. The inauguration of the mill was done by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday, marking a major milestone for the farmers of the region. The reopening of this historic mill is seen as a major boon for farmers, particularly those growing sugarcane.

The Backstory of Rega Sugar Mill

The Rega Sugar Mill, which was established in 1932, had been a vital part of the agricultural economy of the region. However, it had shut down due to poor financial conditions. This mill had been a crucial part of the livelihoods of farmers, especially those in Sitamarhi, Muzaffarpur, and Shivhar districts. Its closure had left thousands of farmers without a reliable outlet for processing their sugarcane.

The demand to reopen the mill was raised during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, when farmers appealed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his visit to the region. Responding to their plea, Shah assured the public that the mill would be reopened, and this promise has now been fulfilled.

Benefits for Farmers

The reopening of the mill is a major boost for around 30,000 to 35,000 sugarcane farmers in the region. The mill has a processing capacity of around 20,000 to 25,000 quintals, and its operation will significantly improve the income and prospects of local farmers. It is expected that the revival of this mill will help increase the supply of processed sugarcane and also create additional employment opportunities for the local population.

A Long-Awaited Move

The mill had been closed since 2021, leaving many farmers struggling to find alternate means of processing their sugarcane. Despite several attempts to revive the mill, obstacles had delayed its reopening. However, after a successful bid by M/s Nigrani Sugars Limited, the mill is now back in operation.

This reopening is not only an economic boost but also a testament to the government’s commitment to addressing the issues of local farmers. The revival of the Rega Sugar Mill is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening the sugarcane farming community in Bihar.

Farmers, especially those in the three districts, are hopeful that this move will help them stabilize their income and ensure a steady demand for their produce.
