External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar firmly defended Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s embrace of Russian President Vladimir Putin during a recent visit to Russia, responding to criticism from Western media and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Jaishankar emphasized that such gestures are deeply rooted in Indian culture, where embracing upon meeting is a common courtesy.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Russia last month, during which he was warmly welcomed by President Putin with a hug, sparked controversy. Critics argued that the gesture undermined global peace efforts, especially given the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Ukrainian President Zelensky described the embrace as a “devastating blow to peace efforts.”
Addressing these criticisms at a press conference, Jaishankar remarked, “In our part of the world, when people meet, they embrace each other. It may not be part of your culture, but I assure you, it is part of ours.” He pointed out that Prime Minister Modi has similarly embraced other world leaders, including President Zelensky, highlighting that such actions should be understood within the context of Indian cultural practices.
Modi’s Historic Visit to Ukraine
Prime Minister Modi’s recent visit to Ukraine marked a significant milestone, being the first by an Indian Prime Minister since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations in 1992. During his visit, Modi engaged in bilateral talks with President Zelensky, focusing on strengthening ties across various sectors, including trade, defense, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and education.
The visit also saw the signing of four key agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation between India and Ukraine. These included agreements in agriculture, medical products regulation, humanitarian grant assistance, and cultural cooperation for 2024-2028.
India’s Stance on the Ukraine Conflict
In his discussions with President Zelensky, PM Modi reiterated India’s commitment to peace, stating, “India was never neutral; we have always been on the side of peace.” He further emphasized India’s willingness to play an active role in facilitating dialogue and progress towards resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
The visit underscores India’s diplomatic efforts to maintain balanced relations with both Russia and Ukraine, even as it navigates the complex geopolitical landscape shaped by the ongoing conflict.
